The short answer is yes. Whether it’s wildfire smoke drifting in from outside or cigarette smoke indoors, the NovusAer can make a big difference in keeping your air clean.
Why Smoke Is So Hard to Remove
Smoke particles are tiny—much smaller than most people realize. On average, smoke particles range in size from 0.4 to 0.7 microns. That puts them in a group called nano-particles, which are the smallest category of particles we measure in the air (0.1–0.9 microns).
For comparison, the “PM2.5” particles you often hear about in air quality reports are already hazardous because they can enter the bloodstream and cause health problems. Nano-particles are even smaller and potentially more harmful.

How NovusAer Handles Smoke
Independent testing has shown that the NovusAer captures 99% of nanoparticles. The only filters that can do slightly better are HEPA filters, which capture about 99.97%. But here’s the key difference:
A typical HEPA filter has a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of 200–400.
An average NovusAer system has a CADR of 1,400.
That means the NovusAer isn’t just efficient—it moves and cleans a lot more air. In fact, it can clean seven times more air than the average room air purifier. And when it comes to cleaning your home, CADR (the amount of clean air produced) matters more than efficiency numbers alone.
Quick Comparison
System Type | Efficiency (Nano-particles) | Typical CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) | Whole-Home Coverage | Maintenance |
NovusAer | 99% | 1,400 | Yes | Replace every 3 years |
HEPA Room Purifier | 99.97% | 200–400 | No (room only) | Replace every 3-4 months |
Standard Home Filter | 0% | 0 | Yes | Replace every 1–3 months |
Stopping Smoke Before It Gets Inside
Filtering the air once smoke is already indoors is essential—but even better is preventing it from getting in. This is where an infiltration mitigation system comes into play.
Here’s how it works:
Instead of smoke sneaking in through cracks, gaps, and holes in your home’s exterior, outside air is drawn in through a special duct connected directly to your HVAC system.
The NovusAer (or another high-CADR system) filters that air before it’s distributed throughout your home.
By keeping your home at a neutral pressure, smoke-laden outdoor air isn’t pulled in unfiltered.
The NovusAer makes this process straightforward and effective. A ducted HEPA system, such as the Lennox Healthy Climate X4914, can also help, but it’s harder to keep the home at neutral pressure with that setup.
The Bottom Line
Yes, the NovusAer can remove smoke from your air—and not just a little, but a lot. It captures the tiniest, most harmful particles, and due to its high CADR, it cleans the air in your entire home far more effectively than typical purifiers. When paired with proper infiltration control, it offers one of the best defenses you can have against wildfire smoke or other sources of indoor smoke pollution.
